Retro adventure platforming game
Downwell+ is an arcade game for mobile devices coming from developer Devolver. It is a vertical platformer that boasts distinct retro minimalist pixel graphics. It also features a procedurally generated world with multiple levels for players to explore, making for a unique and different gameplay experience with each run.
Compared to games like Spelunky 2 or Tallowmere 2, Downwell+ provides an experience that combines simple and easy-to-learn controls with fast-paced twitch gameplay that requires quick reflexes and thinking and pattern recognition. It is a shooter with roguelite elements to it.
Down the well you go
In Downwell+, you play an unnamed character who ventures down a dark and mysterious well in search of hidden treasures and secrets. This space is filled with all kinds of deadly creatures and monsters, so to help you face them, you have your trusty gunboots equipped. The deeper you go, the more danger you face, but you also get rare gems and loot.
Your gunboots are your core means of traversal and survival as it allows you to control your descent with jump bursts as well as fire projectiles at enemies within your line of trajectory. Change to other unique weapons or obtain upgrades to increase the power of your current one. Experiment with different combinations to find one best suited to your playstyle or the situation you're facing.
As mentioned earlier, the game features procedurally generated levels, so gameplay is different every time, and you get to discover all sorts of hidden caves, secrets, and such with each run. There are also some shops where you can buy some helpful items. However, take note that this game is exclusive to Apple Arcade, which requires a subscription in order to play.
Deeper and deeper still
If you like platforming games and are looking for something new to try out, Downwell+ is a fun game worth considering with its distinct vertical gameplay and challenge. There are various ways to customize your gunboots and the world keeps changing with each run, making it feel new every time. So this game definitely racks up high replayability. Try it out.
